Editorial Review

With live music seven nights a week, you'd be insane to get your black liquid anywhere else.

Editorial Review

Irish Murphy's is well known for its live music. Stroll past the venue on any given afternoon and you're likely to hear a band belting out tunes. Most of the other live music venues in the Brisbane CBD have disappeared over the years, so it's good to find a venue still supporting a cross section of cover bands and original music.

While live music is all well and good, trying to carry on a conversation while a band is playing can be difficult. The ground floor of Irish Murphy's is set out in a rectangular shape and there's simply no escaping the music. Whether it's an acoustics issue or just a case of over-zealous bands cranking everything up to 11, having to scream your order to the guy behind the bar is not ideal - especially at 4pm in the afternoon. If live music doesn't do it for you, then you can retreat downstairs to the gaming lounge, or head upstairs to the mezzanine and the 2nd bar.

The decor is exactly what you'd you expect from an Irish pub - only, in this case, a bit more haphazard and random. Irish Murphy's features fake street lamps next to wooden barrels next to bikes hanging from the ceiling. All of this is complemented by a traditional emerald green paint job and poster prints for whiskeys and beers. Nothing to write home about, but it does capture that ?Irish Pub' look successfully.

Like virtually every other Irish Pub in existence, the bulk of the bar take is comprised of beer: Guinness and Kilkenny. Ordering anything more complicated than a basic spirit is, frankly, a bit of a gamble. Still, if you're looking to see some live music in the city centre and are content with beers and a cover band, then Irish Murphy's has you covered. It's not glamorous, but it gets the job done and you can see a band almost any night of the week.

Pub Crawler: I was present at this years St Patricks Day what a party it was awesome and the place keeps getting better the music is great, staff both bar and security are not afraid to have fun. Even the manager's not a bad bloke. Foods great with a new Chef and the drinks prices arn't that bad. (05 September 2008)

Aoifa O'Connell: we arrived at Irish Murphys last year on Saint Patricks Day to have some drinks. we had our first drink in a plastic cup that cost around $4.50 very watered down to the point of no alcohol. We then went for our second drink and after waiting 45 minutes we were finally served. You can imagine our surprise after recieving our 3 plastic cups of watered down alcohol, when they aked for $30. $10 dollars a drink. When we questioned this we were told that they were out of change and had to round the price to the nearest round figure. Correct me if l am wrong, but wouldnt that be $5. We were even more shocked and dismayed when the next person came to the bar and ordered the same drink as us and only payed the $4:50. We figured that only Aussies were being charged the $10. Needless to say we walked out, and never returned. I would not go there on Paddys day, find somewhere else for your hip pockets sake (07 March 2008)
